Nov 16, 2009 4 Comments by thejudopodcast

This podcast, featuring elite judo competitor, artist and business owner Justin Flores, discusses the similarities between judo and other forms of art.  Justin has been studying judo since the age of 8, and is now has created the graphic media company J. Flores Productions www.jfloproductions.com  He was a successful competitor early on, and after high school accepted a full scholarship from Nebraska in wrestling.  After a couple years, he left collegiate wrestling to return to judo, and within only 6 months, continued his success winning a national championship title, runner up in the US Open and placing in the European World Cup.  Other judo career highlights include:

  • 3x National Champion
  • 3x World Team
  • 5x US Open finalist
  • 2x Rendezvous Champion
  • Olympic Alternate
  • 4x World Cup place winner
  • Pan American Medalist
  • NYAC Champion

His artwork can be seen at his website, and below is another video example from his company, which was shot by his brother, Jacob Flores, Director of Video Production.   This was a great conversation, and definitely shows the versatility in talent of Justin.  Episode 47

    Hi Guys!
One of my all time favourite podcasts on the show!

I am so with you guys on how Judo can be an artistic expression of your self. I have always considered the great champions and their unique throws as being art.

I too have striven to create Ippon, to feel that moment that is the moment of pure art in Judo.

The Art of Judo is perhaps more like dance or music that it is a performance art rather than a form like paints where an artifact is left behind (to borrow Gene’s term).

    great GREAT show guys!

    Lance
